‘When will we get to see the constitution and
will our voice be included in it?’ the question that had once been in the mind
of every Nepali is drowning down in the drain.
After the continuous
extension of the constitution making process, people are frustrated by looking
at the act of our political leaders and waiting for the amended constitution. The
Constituent Assembly (CA) has been extended for four times. First on May 28,
2010 for a year then on May 28, 2011 for three months, thirdly on August 29,
2011 for another three months and finally on November 29, 2011 for another six
months.
As Martin Luther King
had dreamt of having racial justice and an integrated society, every Nepali is
dreaming about a peaceful country with equal justice and opportunity through
‘New Constitution’. It might not be a justifiable comparison though, but
analyzing our leaders’ attitude and concern towards the country, peace seems to
be a dream. The formation of constituent assembly with 601 members had brought
rays of hope among us and it seemed possible then. But even after waiting for
more than four years desperately for the amended constitution and so called
‘New Nepal’, nothing has changed in the country except the prime minister.
CA members are always
busy discussing their own agenda. How will they bring peace in the country when
they themselves can’t solve their internal party conflict? In the tenure of
constitution making process, numbers of prime ministers have changed and every
political party has had the taste of this ‘prestigious’ position rather than a
‘responsible’ position as I say it. The taste is so good that they don’t want
to let go of it. Every leader promise to do this and that, but as the day
passes, they forget about their promises and obligations.
The issue of inclusiveness
and equality allowed every leader to form numbers of small independent parties
with handful of members, who got to have direct voice on this statute making but
still this was unable solve the problem. In this crucial state where country is
going nowhere, our CA members should be concerned about their goals and
objectives rather than their own interest and their seats. Or if they are
waiting to find the other job that pays them more as their current position, it’s
high time they speed up their process.
However, even after the
declaration by Supreme Court for the final six months, there will be nothing
shameful than this if the members are not serious regarding the constitution
making process. I hope they show some dignity and respect towards their
profession. My fingers are crossed to get the first draft of glorious constitution
by the end of January as our CA members promised.
